About Roing

Roing is the district headquarters of the Lower Dibang Valley district in Arunachal Pradesh. It is the census town and is one of the sub divisions of the Lower Dibang Valley district. The Roing circle was opened in 1951. The town is the only commercial centre to both the Upper and the Lower Dibang Valley district.

Roing is located at the foothills of the Mishmi hills. To the north of Roing flows the Eje river. The river swells in summer. The villages of Adi Padams that extend to the border of Assam lie to the south. Roing is quite a plain area compared to other places of Arunachal Pradesh which are majorly hilly areas.

Roing, the headquarter of the Lower Dibang Valley district, experiences moderate and temperate weather conditions throughout the year. During the winter months the climate in Roing is accompanied by mist and fog. The weather also remains windy. Roing experienced annual rainfall of 3418.80mm during 2001-2002. The average number of rainy days at Roing is 170 days.

According to 2001 India census, Roing had a population of 10,106. Male population is 57 % and female population is 43 %. The average literacy rate of Roing is 73 %. The male literacy rate is 79 % and the female literacy rate is 66 %.

Roing is inhabited by the tribal Idu-Mishmi community. Tribal culture is predominant in Roing. The tribe has its distinct cultural heritage. People observe their specific festivals and way of lives. Reh is the most important festival celebrated by the tribal community during the month of February.

Agriculture is the main mode of living of the people of Roing town. The main agricultural products include paddy, mustard, maize, and millet. In accordance with agriculture horticultural products like orange, banana, ginger, pineapple and papaya are produced by the people.
